7.18. Queen Betty’s Lunar Refusal

(Location: JOAC Sealed Observatory Dome)

Description:
The Sealed Dome could not be opened—except on lunar eclipses. Today was one. A small audience gathered: technicians, former astronomers, a child who spoke in riddles. The dome split along a seam. Inside: a projector pointed at the moon. On the table beside it: a reel titled *Boop’s Defection*. Juna loaded it. Nothing projected onto the sky, but the reel itself emitted images inside their minds: Queen Betty hovering over a crater, slowly shaking her head. Behind her, towers fell upward. The audience did not gasp. They nodded, knowingly. Juna whispered, “She didn’t come for us. She came to un-come.” When the dome resealed, the moon had vanished from the sky. Not covered. Gone.

Very Short Story:
Judai couldn’t look away. Even without images, the reel rewrote expectation. The moon turned red, then gray, then gone. Juna closed her eyes and saw Betty—older than ever depicted—floating away. “It’s not protest,” the child beside them said. “It’s patience.” Someone began to hum a tune with no melody. The dome closed. The technicians bowed. When they stepped outside, no one could remember the moon’s shape. Not even its idea.
