7.2. The Map in the Castle
(Location: Observatory Control Room B, beneath JOAC)
Description:
Within the lowest chamber of the JOAC observatory—deep beneath Mitaka’s public viewing domes—Judai and Juna discovered a map without marks. The walls glowed with broadcast light, where maps were pinned against backlit CRTs, revealing ancient routes like veins. These were navigation maps of the universe’s forgotten corners, rendered before the telescopes had coordinates to follow. It was here that Juna noticed the subtle burns left by observation points—emissions of radiation stored by accident or fate. Queen Betty Boop, encoded in the stars as a cosmic synchronizer, was traced faintly in silhouette, her likeness recurring across centuries of charting errors. The map was not a guide—it was a symptom, a collection of points where space had paused, stared, then moved on. The room pulsed like an old analog signal, both illuminating and erasing.

Very Short Story:
Judai held up his notebook and let the light from the map pass through it, revealing a second, handwritten layer of stars. Juna sat cross-legged on the floor beneath the CRTs, tracing constellation outlines that didn’t belong to any known sky. “This isn’t navigation,” she said. “It’s a witness list.” Every observation point blinked faintly, like old war correspondents’ signals. One frequency repeated three times, slowly modulating into something like music. She marked it as the Queen’s signature. The map began to warm, and one dot in the far-left corner began to fade—perhaps never meant to be seen again. They left the room slowly, neither closing the door nor speaking. Some maps weren’t meant to be read, only remembered.
