4.20. The Ceremony of Provisional Peace
(Location: Placeholder Plaza, Proclamation Zone Theta)
Description:
In Zone Theta, peace is declared daily at noon—then revoked by dusk. A banner reads: *Welcome to the Last Temporary Peace.* Juna and Judai arrive just as a brass band plays a melody titled “While It Lasts.” Confetti falls. Children wave symbols that change depending on who sees them. Judai holds a program listing past iterations: *Peace No. 34 (Mostly Symbolic), Peace No. 41 (With Exceptions).* The crowd cheers, uncertain. Juna finds a ledger of signatures—one for each failed truce. “It’s more ritual than result,” she notes. At dusk, fireworks announce its end. A man with a clipboard yells, “Same time tomorrow!” The plaza empties. But the peace—however provisional—felt real for a moment. And maybe that was enough.

Very Short Story:
They stood with the crowd and clapped. Not out of belief, but participation. The confetti smelled of ink. One streamer bore the words: *As If It Had Happened.* Juna kissed the air above a document she didn’t sign. Judai looked up as a drone passed, dropping a second banner: *Time’s Up.* Still, the laughter felt unforced. “Maybe pretending is how peace starts,” he said. The sun dipped below a holographic flag. They walked away, not relieved—but less burdened. That night, neither mentioned war in their notes.
