Summary of Day 20 – Playback Corridors and the Museum That Repeats Before Memory

Day 20 finds Judai and Juna in Nagasaki, drawn to the lower levels of the Atomic Bomb Museum, though not as visitors to an exhibit. They descend into a sealed zone known only during outages as the Labyrinth of Playback—an unauthorized corridor beneath official memory. This labyrinth contains rows of projectors embedded into the walls, playing 13-second fragments onto scarred concrete. There is no signage, no narration—just flashes of postwar streets, interrupted lives, shadows walking toward unknowable moments. The film loops do not show the explosion. They show what was almost remembered, and then lost again.

The space does not behave like a room. It is temporal architecture, where walking too fast re-triggers the same sequence, and reading aloud from a book can insert one’s shadow into the film. Juna experiments with voice; Judai sketches the sequence until he realizes he has drawn the same image four times. A wall near the end glows with a countdown that omits “zero.” In this museum, there is no detonation—only the pause before.

Midway through, they discover a projector unconnected to power. It still runs. Its source is uncertain, but the image it casts is consistent: a family entering their house and never emerging. Judai notes that the corridor is not memory—it’s replay without conclusion. The power that fuels the machines cannot be traced, but their persistence is evident. It is as if the corridor runs on the tension between what must be shown and what cannot be acknowledged.

Later in the day, they are taken by ferry to an island nearby where radiation monitoring devices have been mounted on film reels nailed to trees. Children once performed ritual “forgetting ceremonies” here, placing their names in reels and sending them into the tide. Juna finds a partially burned registration log, listing students as “Present, but not located.” A speaker plays an evacuation notice from the future.

As night falls, they return to the Labyrinth. The images have changed. Judai sees himself walking behind a woman he doesn’t know but has dreamed of before. Juna reads a phrase written on the wall: “We do not replay to remember. We replay to avoid.”

Day 20 ends with the corridor going dark—not powered down, but waiting for the next absence.
